He held her in the stillness of early morning, his chin resting on her shoulder and his fingers tracing circles over her stomach, which was large with child. He smiled as he felt a small and restless kicking under his hand. It wouldn’t be long…

She stretched slightly, pointing her toes toward the footboard of the bed, and then snuggled closer to him as she yawned and opened her eyes. A smile played across her lips as she giggled.

“Did we really—” Adora began to ask.

“Yeah,” Wyatt interrupted with a small blush.

“Was it as good as I seem to remember?”

“Oh yes,” he said confidently, the blush increasing slightly. “Better than good. I hope we have an opportunity to do that again sometime.”

She giggled. “Complete with the bath afterward?”

“How about tonight?” he asked, not bothering to keep the impatience from his voice.

“That would be—” she broke off with a small groan as her body stiffened slightly.

Wyatt tightened his arms around her protectively, then noticed the moisture seeping through the sheets. His head came up very quickly.

“Time to call the midwife?”

Adora just gritted her teeth as she nodded.

Wyatt spent the next fifteen minutes in a flurry of action. After the first contraction was over, Adora laughed at his haste. She couldn’t reassure him that they had time and that it wasn’t urgent that the midwife come before the next contractions. Wyatt was the typical new father, however, and the midwife arrived within half an hour.

Adora’s family followed soon after the midwife, and Wyatt’s father arrived around noon. The men gently ribbed Wyatt for his nervousness, but they didn’t kid him too much. They both remembered how they felt when they were in the same position. They also both knew that Wyatt didn’t have the kind of temperament that allowed him to take teasing gracefully.

The men all spent the day outside the small cabin. Adora’s mother made sure that they didn’t even darken the door.

“This is the business of women,” she said, more harshly than was strictly necessary when Wyatt tried to come in for a glass of water. “You’ll be allowed in as soon as it’s over.” She did come out a few minutes later with a pitcher of water for them, and again every hour or so.

“Nervous” wasn’t an adequate word to describe how Wyatt felt as he wore a new path in the grass outside the cabin. “Chaotic” might have been better. His thoughts kept jumping from apprehension to elation, from fear to joy. He’d never dreamed that this day would be so draining.

Fourteen hours later, Wyatt stood over a small white bassinette, unable to tear his eyes away from the little bundle of blue blankets that lay there, the little tuft of wispy hair just barely visible. As tired as he was, Wyatt simply couldn’t get enough of the sight. After endless hours of waiting, pacing outside the small cabin while the midwives helped Adora through the labor, he hadn’t anticipated that the fatigue would lessen once he finally saw his child for the first time.

Someone, probably his father-in-law, had placed a chair behind him, but he would have to look away to turn and find its exact location so he wouldn’t fall as he sat. And Wyatt didn’t want to look away. So he stood, ignoring the pain in his feet. Then another someone, probably his brother-in-law, put a firm hand on his shoulder and pushed him into the awaiting chair. Wyatt was too engrossed in watching his son to notice the relief of the pressure in his feet.

Quite murmurs surrounded him, but Wyatt didn’t care to listen. He could barely hear the familiar sound of his mother-in-law’s voice as she spoke with the midwives, who were getting ready to leave. He knew that his father and father-in-law were chatting quietly in another corner of the room, but he was oblivious to their conversation. He ignored every sight and sound except his son.

Until a very familiar voice broke through the din.

“Wyatt?” asked Adora sleepily.

He didn’t even think about answering her call. His body moved of its own accord, his feet not needing conscious thought to take the few steps toward the bed. He knelt beside it, taking her hand in his. She smiled at him through tired and bleary eyes and tried to speak.

Wyatt shushed her quietly. “Rest,” he said firmly. “We can talk once you’ve slept.”

She smiled again and nodded, then allowed her eyes to close. The look of peace and contentment on her face mirrored the feelings of his own heart. The world around them could go to hell in a hand basket and he wouldn’t notice. He had his wife, beautiful even though she looked exactly like any woman would who had been through fourteen hours of childbirth. He had his son, tiny and frail in his bassinette. This was all he needed, all he wanted, all he cared about.

And life was good.

And that is why we love him. *nods*

It's not.. I just realized that you said you'd write one, I said I'd write one.

I posted one. You posted one.

If it matters, it's a GOOD kind of fic-off :)

This was so wonderful!

Wyatt is definitely the type of guy to where a hole in the ground while Adora goes through labor.

That scene at the end is just so beautiful! I'm leaking tears here!

LOVED IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I really loved this. Its sweet, and the pacing is well done, and its all fluffy and snuggly, and there's a baby at the end, which is always the best way to end!

This paragraph was fantastic. :)
